Kolkata : Medella Karkinos Oncology Institute (Karkinos Healthcare Kolkata), one of the leading purpose-driven technology-led oncology platforms, organized an awareness session to observe Blood Cancer Awareness Month at its hospital premises. The institute is reiterating the urgent need for early detection, regular health check-ups, and a healthy lifestyle to reduce the burden of cancer. The session focused on spreading awareness about preventive measures, the importance of timely diagnosis, and the role of lifestyle in managing and combating the disease.
Blood Cancer Awareness Month, observed every September, aims to raise awareness about different types of blood cancers. Blood cancer is an umbrella term often used for leukaemia, (cancers of the blood-forming tissues), lymphoma (cancers of the lymphatic system) and multiple myeloma (a plasma-cell cancer that often affects bone). It is one of the most catastrophic diseases around the globe.
The awareness session was attended by patients, healthcare professionals, and members of the community. The Centre also highlighted the need for regular screenings, healthy lifestyle practices, and community awareness programs to reduce cancer risks and improve overall health outcomes. The initiative highlighted the symptoms that people should not ignore, such as unexplained fatigue, frequent infections, weight loss, persistent fever, and unusual bleeding or bruising.
Speaking at the session, Dr. Akther Jawade, Director East, Karkinos Healthcare said, “Blood cancer survival rates have significantly improved over time. With advancements in medical science and, treatments such as chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, stem cell transplants, and precision medicine have made significant progress in improving survival rates and quality of life for patients. To treat Blood Cancer, a Bone marrow transplant is one of the best options. The patient’s chance of survival increases with a bone marrow transplant. Other treatment options are the use of Chemotherapy and Radiation Therapy. Chemotherapy uses anticancer drugs to treat blood cancer. In radiation therapy, the cancer cells are destroyed by radiation.”
Dr. Jawade, added, “Early detection plays a crucial role in the fight against blood cancers. If diagnosed at the right stage, many cases can be managed effectively with timely treatment. In India, while survival rates have improved, we still lag behind the global averages due to delayed diagnosis and limited access to advanced treatments in certain regions. However, awareness, early screening programs, and increasing availability of cutting-edge treatments are helping close this gap, giving patients a better fighting chance.”
Beyond hospital-based initiatives, Medella Karkinos Oncology Institute has been actively conducting awareness drives and cancer screening camps in rural and semi-urban areas of North 24 Parganas, Hooghly, Nadia and neighboring districts. These community-level interventions help in early identification of cancer symptoms among people who otherwise have limited access to specialized healthcare. Timely detection through these camps has enabled many patients to begin treatment at an early stage, improving both survival and recovery.
Medella Karkinos Oncology Institute is located at 87F, BT Road, Kamarhati, Agarpara, Kolkata 700058.
