Kolkata: Tollywood’s most popular and versatile actor, Anirban Bhattacharya ventures into his feature film directorial debut with ‘Ballavpurer Roopkotha’, to be released under the banner of SVF. Bhattacharya, who earned groundbreaking appreciation for donning the director’s hat for his web series ‘Mandaar’ last month, is all set to try his hands in feature films.

‘Ballavpurer Roopkatha’, a quirky horror-comedy that revolves around the eccentric story of Ballavpur Rajbari’s last descendant, is designed to initiate an evolution in the kind and quality of Bengali films that are slated to be produced in the coming years. Anirban Bhattacharya’s directorial vision reflects with ‘Ballavpurer Roopkotha’ in a way that not only aims to entertain the audience with its elements and narrative but also to encourage the birth of more disruptive ideas and concept in the Bengali movie market.

With a talented crew in execution, this very film plans to employ the same ingenuity and finesse in its making! The music of the film will be composed by the talented Subhadeep Guha and Debraj Bhattacharya.  While Ballavpurer Roopkotha is written by Anirban Bhattacharya himself along with his closest professional ally- Prateek Dutta, the cinematography will be led by Soumik Halder- one of the best cinematographers' that contemporary Bengali film industry has seen.

‘Ballavpurer Roopkatha’ will tell the story of the almost crumbling Rajbari of Ballavpur which only has two men living- The last descendant of the Ray dynasty – Bhupati Ray and his inherited menial Manohar. The ’Dynasty’ merely exists as there is no trace of wealth except this ruin. Both the dwellers are overburdened with heavy debts and seek no hope of betterment until one day they get a proposal of selling off their property. What continues is a hullabaloo of actions by Bhupati Ray, Manohar, the buyers and one ghost that makes Ballavpur Rajbari a temple of chaos for that night!

The film is based on Badal Sarkar’s very popular drama piece ‘Ballavpurer Rupkotha’. Excited about bringing the movie to the audience, Anirban Bhattacharya said “I have always been extremely fond of horror comedies/ satires since childhood and needless to say we are fortunate enough to get some fantastic horror comedies from great filmmakers over the years. I won’t say that this particular genre hasn't been tapped by Bengali filmmakers before as there have been Bengali movies that parallelly experimented with horror and comedy in the same narrative. However, the number is quite less. ‘Ballavpurer Roopkotha’ will be light-hearted yet surprising. My last work explored the dark, gory side of human conscience but this time I want to keep it as blithe and effervescent as possible. However, me and Prateek don’t aim to incorporate regardless substances in the narrative that might impact the sustenance of the audience while movie watching. Starting off my first feature film as a director with SVF and I am glad that they have entrusted me with creating a project that I have always wanted to. “
