History of Indian cinema has always been full of surprises and, here comes yet another surprise by the director Saibal Mitra, for the audience with his yet-to-shoot film ‘Debotaar Graash’, a movie adapted from the American play ‘Inherit the wind’ by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee. The movie also will screen two superstars one from Bollywood and the other from the Bengali film industry. Ironically, when Naseeruddin Shah was in town, he expressed with the grief of the absence of the opportunity to work with the Bengali veteran actor Soumitro Chattopadhyay.
The director has been for quite some time in deep thoughts about the communalism, intolerance and the religious chaos in the society. “It was when I read the play ‘Inherit the wind’ and watched the film by Stanley Kremmer that I thought of scripting a film on it. Spencer Tracy and Fredric March, the main cast in the film, was superb in justifying the characters. I was sure that Naseeruddin Shah is the apt person for the role but was unsure about his response to me. I send him a WhatsApp message and he responded.” says, Saibal Mitra. The veteran actor, Shah, speaks on it, “I was thinking on similar lines for 20 years and when Saibal approached me I was quite happy. This is a very strong script and he is not new to me so when he approached me it was a yes.”
Soumitra Chattopadhyay, the superstar of the Bengali film industry expresses his joy, “I was moved by the script and to share the screen with Naseeruddin Shah will be a real pleasure for me. I am keenly waiting for this project.”
The cast is carefully chosen to do full justice to the film. Kaushik Sen will be seen in the character of a Delhi based journalist says, “On one hand it is Naseruddin Shah who cannot be just tagged as an actor but he is much beyond that and on the other Soumitra Chattopadhyay, my role model and Gurudev clubbed with Saibalda. I am too excited about the project.
