Kolkata, 13th November, 2018: Disha Eye Hospitals hosted an interactive session on Diabetic Retinopathy & It’s Effects On Vision today, on the eve of World Diabetes DayDr.TusharKantiSinha,Senior Consultant & Head of Retina Services, Disha Eye Hospitals &Hony. General Secretary of Vitreo-Retinal Society of West Bengal (VRSWB)spoke about the symptoms, causes, complications and preventive measures of Diabetic Retinopathy.

“Diabetic eye screening is a must for diabetic patients as they are at a high risk of damaging their eye due to diabetic retinopathy, a condition that can lead to sight loss if it is not treated on time. Everyone with diabetes aged over 12 years should get their eyes screened once a year. That’s why every year, we host a free diabetic eye screening to spread awareness among people and so they can get diabetic retinopathy treated at right time. The theme of this year is The Family and Diabetes", said Dr.TusharKantiSinha, Senior Consultant & Head of Retina Services, Disha Eye Hospitals &Hony. General Secretary of Vitreo- Retinal Society of West Bengal (VRSWB).

India currently represents 49% of the World’s diabetes burden, with an estimated 72 million cases in 2017, a figure expected to almost double to 134 million by 2025, a person with diabetes is always at risk for vision loss, apart from other medical conditions.

Over several years, a high blood sugar level can weaken and damage the tiny blood vessels in the retina. This can result in various problems including small blow-out swellings of blood vessels, small leaks of fluid from damaged blood vessels, small bleeds from damaged blood vessels and blood vessels may just become blocked. This can cut off the blood and oxygen supply to small sections of the retina. New abnormal blood vessels may grow from damaged blood vessels. This is called proliferative retinopathy. These new vessels are delicate and can bleed easily. The leak of fluid, bleed and blocked blood vessels damages the cells of the retina. In some severe cases, damaged blood vessels bleed into the jelly-like center of the eye. This can also affect vision by blocking light rays going to the retina. Diabetic eye screening is important as it helps to prevent sight loss. Screening can detect the condition early before you notice any changes to your vision.

Disha Eye Hospitals is starting Diabetes Eye Screening (DES) Clinics, an awareness building and screening program for Diabetes and Diabetic Retinopathy across all their centers of Disha Eye Hospitals. Patients can avail the services of Diabetic Retinopathy Screening free of cost at all the centers of Disha Eye Hospitals from 14th to 21st November, 2018 at Barrackpore, Durgapur, Sheoraphuli, Barasat, Sinthi, Teghoria, Behala, Gariahat, Berhampore, Bardhaman, Mourigram and Siliguri.
