New Delhi : In a special ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan today, the Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, felicitated NorthEast United Football Club (NEUFC) for their historic victory in the 2025 edition of the IndianOil Durand Cup.
The President presented the President’s Cup—one of the three prestigious trophies awarded to the champions—marking a moment of immense pride for the club, its supporters, and the Indian footballing community.
Instituted in 1956 by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, India’s first President, the President’s Cup has remained a distinguished symbol of sporting excellence and honour, reflecting the tournament’s enduring association with India’s heritage. The ceremony celebrated not only NEUFC’s milestone achievement but also the legacy of the Indian Armed Forces in fostering football and strengthening the spirit of national unity.
The Hon’ble President handed over the trophy to Mr. John Abraham (Owner, NEUFC), Mr. Redeem Tlang (Captain, NEUFC), and Mr. Mandar Vijaykumar Tamhane (CEO, NEUFC), in the presence of esteemed dignitaries, members of the Durand Football Tournament Society, and the Durand Cup Organising Committee.
Expressing gratitude on behalf of the club, Mr. John Abraham thanked the Hon’ble President for the recognition and lauded the Indian Armed Forces for their pivotal role in preserving the Durand Cup’s glorious tradition. He further commended the Eastern Command for their exemplary efforts in elevating the tournament, nurturing football talent across the East and North-East, and significantly contributing to the overall growth of Indian football.
The ceremony concluded with a commemorative group photograph of the Hon’ble President with the victorious NEUFC squad and members of the Organising Committees—a proud symbol of the unity of sport, service, and nation.
