Hooghly : In the suburban areas of Hooghly, many cardiac patients put
their trust in independent Cath labs or diagnostic centres. What most people
fail to understand is, the unavailability of next line referral, redo testing,
or unresolved complications in these Cath labs can cost precious time, time
that could be crucial in saving a patient’s life. According to recent research
by the Cardiological Society of India, over 40% of cardiac patients in tier-2
and rural areas are referred for complex care only after their condition
worsens severely. It is not infrequent for such patients in these regions to be
rushed out by their families on desperate late-night trips for urgent
treatment—valuable hours that, with improved access, could have been conserved.
Highlighting Manipal Hospital’s commitment towards best cardiac care excellence
in Eastern India, Dr. Subhasis Roy
Chowdhury, Director, Cath Lab, Manipal Hospital, Broadway, shared a
critical procedure on a 40-year-old IAS officer who was admitted while
suffering a massive heart attack.
Speaking about the advanced facilities at
Manipal Hospitals, Dr. Subhasis Roy
Chowdhury, HOD - Cath Lab, Manipal Hospital,
Broadway, said, "The patient, a 40-year-old IAS
officer, came to us in the middle of the night after suffering a massive heart
attack — a full-blown anterior wall myocardial infarction. He had already been
evaluated at a local facility where he was diagnosed, but by the time he
reached our emergency, he was in cardiogenic shock with dangerously low blood
pressure. As per our 24x7 Heart Attack Protocol, he was rushed to the cath lab
within minutes of arrival. An emergency angiography revealed a 100% blockage in
the LAD artery, the main vessel supplying blood to the heart. The flow in the
artery was restored with emergency angioplasty (stenting). During his
treatment, he developed recurrent ventricular tachycardia, a life-threatening
rhythm disturbance, and required over 20 electric shocks, along with intubation
and continuous sedation. It was a race against time, but the coordinated effort
of our cath lab team, nurses, RMOs, and critical care staff ensured he was
stabilized and gradually improved. By Day 3, he was awake, off the ventilator,
and fit for discharge. At Manipal Hospitals, our mission is to offer comprehensive cardiac care
that extends beyond just procedures. I can confidently say that people from
regions like Hooghly are in safe hands with us.”
What
makes Manipal different is not just scale, but the ability to respond in real
time. Whether it’s a collapse during a stenting procedure or a post-surgical
complication, the hospital is equipped with 500+ critical care beds, 75 expert
cardiologists, 15 highly skilled cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons (CTVS),
and seven advanced Cath Labs placed strategically to serve patients from Hooghly.24x7
emergency teams, and in-house specialists for nephrology, endocrinology,
neurology, and more, ensuring no delay in life-saving decisions. Every year it carries
out more than 30,000 cardiac procedures and over 3,000 cardiac surgeries.
