Kolkata – In a powerful fusion of cultural celebration and cinematic artistry, the directors of My Melbourne embarked on a nostalgic ride aboard Kolkata’s iconic Heritage Tram ahead of the film’s special screening at the Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF). The event symbolized the shared heritage of trams between Kolkata and Melbourne—two cities rich in history, creativity, and cultural vibrancy.

Directed by a dynamic quartet of filmmakers—Imtiaz Ali, Onir, Rima Das, and Kabir Khan—My Melbourne is an anthology that delves into deep, resonant themes of race, gender, sexuality, and disability. Having been a standout feature at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) earlier this year, the film continues to captivate global audiences with its poignant narratives that bridge diverse perspectives and embrace inclusivity.

The tram journey began at the historic Esplanade Tram Depot, where the directors interacted with passionate cinephiles in an intimate meet-and-greet session. The Heritage Tram, adorned with captivating imagery from My Melbourne, further celebrated the film’s journey—a testament to the convergence of history, culture, and cinema.

Imtiaz Ali, the creative director of My Melbourne, shared his excitement: “The connection between My Melbourne and Kolkata is deeply rooted in trams. As four directors from the Indian film industry, we came together in Melbourne to craft a film that embodies inclusivity and collective living. It’s the first time I’ve worked on an anthology, and while our stories differ, they are united through the shared experience of Melbourne. Being here at the Kolkata International Film Festival to represent My Melbourne is a dream come true. And it’s always a joy to ride the trams in Kolkata—I truly hope these trams remain a cherished part of the city for years to come.”

Mitu Bhowmick Lange AM, producer of My Melbourne, expressed her pride in bringing the film to her hometown: “It’s an honor to showcase My Melbourne at the Kolkata International Film Festival, a festival I hold dear. The energy in this city is infectious, and riding the tram today, which ties together Melbourne and Kolkata’s shared tram heritage, feels incredibly symbolic. Just as trams connect people, our stories in My Melbourne aim to do the same. It’s a beautiful way to engage with all of you today.”

Onir, director of My Melbourne, reflected on the significance of the moment: “This is an emotional moment for me. After two decades in the film industry, this is the first time my work is being featured at the Kolkata International Film Festival. It’s especially meaningful because I grew up watching films at this very festival. To have my film now playing at Nandan-I, where I once dreamed of sitting, is truly surreal.”

Rahul, co-director of Kabir Khan’s segment, echoed the power of the tram as a unifying symbol: “The tram in My Melbourne takes you from one story to the next, and today, it carries our film to the people of Kolkata. It’s an honor to be part of such a prestigious festival, and it feels wonderful to share this experience with the city that plays such an important role in the narrative.”

This event was more than just a celebration of cinema—it also highlighted Kolkata’s tram system as a cultural treasure, a fixture of the city for over 150 years. Drawing parallels with Melbourne’s iconic trams, the event underscored the deep cultural and artistic ties that connect these two cities, steeped in shared heritage and vision.

As part of the KIFF experience, the Heritage Tram will continue its special runs until December 11, 2024, providing locals and visitors alike with a chance to experience the vibrant culture of Kolkata while celebrating the rich cinematic journey of My Melbourne.

This unique event not only pays homage to Kolkata’s beloved tram system but also marks an unforgettable moment in the city's cultural history, as art and heritage collide in this unforgettable journey.
