Kolkata : August is observed as Appendix Cancer Awareness Month across the world to shed light on one of the rarest and lesser-known forms of cancer. Appendix cancer begins when abnormal cells grow inside the appendix. Although rare, it can become life-threatening if left undiagnosed or untreated. Marking the significance of Appendix Cancer Awareness Month, Medella Karkinos Oncology Institute (Karkinos Healthcare Kolkata), one of the leading purpose-driven technology-led oncology platforms, organized a special Awareness Session on Appendix Cancer. The initiative aimed to educate people about this rare form of cancer, its symptomsrisk factors, and the importance of early detection for effective treatment.

Appendix Cancer is a relatively rare type of cancer that happens when cells develop from the appendix and change and grow out of control. It is more common in people above 50 years old but may happen at any age. It may present with signs such as abdominal painbloating, changes in bowel habits, nausea, or unexplained weight loss. Due to its vague and non-specific symptoms, appendix cancer often goes unnoticed until it reaches an advanced stage, making awareness and timely detection crucial. To lower the risk for cancers, people should refrain from using tobacco products and, limit the amount of alcohol consumption.

Emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis, experts at the session highlighted that timely screening and medical consultation can significantly improve survival outcomes and reduce the disease burden.

Dr. Akhter Jawade, Director-East, Karkinos Healthcare, said, “Appendix cancer is rare, but not untreatable. The challenge lies in the fact that its symptoms are often vague and mistaken for common digestive issues. That is why awareness and regular health check-ups play a vital role. With timely diagnosis and access to advanced treatment options, patients can have a better chance at recovery and an improved quality of life. To make sure cancer patients are not left out and get correct and timely consultation, Karkinos Healthcare Kolkata organizes regular Cancer Awareness Programmes and Early Detection Camps in different districts to sensitize the people of West Bengal.”

The session was attended by patients, healthcare professionals, and members of the community. The Centre also highlighted the need for regular screenings, healthy lifestyle practices, and community awareness programs to reduce cancer risks and improve overall health outcomes.

With this initiative, Medella Karkinos Oncology Institute reaffirmed its commitment to spreading awareness and providing advanced, affordable, and compassionate cancer care to the people of the districts and beyond.
