Kolkata : August is observed as Appendix Cancer Awareness Month across the world to shed light on one of the rarest and lesser-known forms of cancer. Appendix cancer begins when abnormal cells grow inside the appendix. Although rare, it can become life-threatening if left undiagnosed or untreated. Marking the significance of Appendix Cancer Awareness Month, Medella Karkinos Oncology Institute (Karkinos Healthcare Kolkata), one of the leading purpose-driven technology-led oncology platforms, organized a special Awareness Session on Appendix Cancer. The initiative aimed to educate people about this rare form of cancer, its symptoms, risk factors, and the importance of early detection for effective treatment.
Appendix Cancer is a relatively rare type of cancer that happens when cells develop from the appendix and change and grow out of control. It is more common in people above 50 years old but may happen at any age. It may present with signs such as abdominal pain, bloating, changes in bowel habits, nausea, or unexplained weight loss.
