Durand Cup 2025 Kicks Off in Kolkata; CM Mamata Leads Grand Opening

Payel Paul, Kolkata : The 134th edition of the iconic IndianOil Durand Cup began with grandeur and patriotic fervour at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, as West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee ceremonially kicked off the tournament, marking the start of Asia’s oldest football competition.

A packed stadium witnessed an energetic and culturally rich opening ceremony featuring Bengal’s traditional Baul songs, martial arts displays by the Indian Army, and high-octane regimental performances like Bhangra, Gatka, and Khukri dances. The sky came alive with a dramatic helicopter fly-past carrying the National Flag and tournament banners, adding military precision to the celebratory mood.

Dignitaries present included senior ministers from the West Bengal government and top Army officials including Lt Gen Ram Chander Tiwari and other members of the Durand Cup Organising Committee.

The Chief Minister met players from East Bengal FC and debutants South United FC before performing the symbolic match kick-off, as football fans erupted in cheer. A few souvenir balls were also kicked into the stands to excite the younger audience.

This year, the tournament spans five states—West Bengal, Assam, Jharkhand, Meghalaya, and Manipur—marking its biggest-ever geographical expansion. Kolkata will host 15 matches including the quarterfinals, semifinals, and the grand final.

Founded in 1888, the Durand Cup is not just a tournament but a legacy—showcasing India’s footballing passion and military discipline. With teams from across the country, the 2025 edition promises a month-long celebration of sport, unity, and tradition.
