Howrah : Timely intervention and advanced medical
care can make a remarkable life-saving intervention. Recently, Manipal Hospitals, one of the largest
healthcare networks in India, saved the life of a 56-year-old diabetic and hypertensive male patient from Howrah. The patient who initially reported
to a local nursing home with severe chest pain, was referred for advanced
cardiac treatment. Immediately, he was admitted to Manipal Hospital, Mukundapur, and underwent advanced cardiac tests like
Trop T as well as ECG under the supervision of Dr. Parijat Deb Choudhury, Consultant, Interventional
Cardiologist. The test results showed that he had suffered a severe heart
attack.
To
clearly understand the complexity, the team of doctors undertook a special type
of heart scan called Transradial Angiography
(a painless and bloodless heart scan conducted through the wrist). The
investigation revealed a critical blockage in the left main artery of the
heart. Given the high risk of the case, Dr. Parijat and her skilled team carefully
performed a complex procedure to treat the blocked arteries using advanced
technology called IVUS-guided Left Main
Bifurcation. The use of Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) provided real-time
imaging from inside the artery. It was found that the artery was very hard and
narrow because of the calcium accumulation within the walls of the artery. The
team of experts also placed a special cutting balloon and medicated stents to
keep the artery open. Initially, the patient was a bit unstable, but he
recovered quickly post-procedure and was discharged in a stable condition on
the very next day.
While
explaining the case, Dr. Parijat Deb
Choudhury, Consultant, Interventional Cardiologist, Manipal Hospital,
Mukundapur, said, “This case is a reminder that timely intervention and
access to advanced cardiac technology can make the difference between life and
death. Using IVUS-guided angioplasty, we were able to visualize and treat a
critical left main artery blockage with precision. What made it truly
meaningful was seeing a high-risk patient recover so quickly, painlessly and
safely. At Manipal Hospital, Mukundapur, we are proud to bring the best and
comprehensive cardiac care within the reach of patients from the districts and
surrounding areas.”
The patient stated, “When I first felt the chest pain, I did
not realize it was something so serious. But everything changed so fast. I was
rushed to the hospital, and within moments, the doctors diagnosed a heart
attack. I was terrified. But from the minute I arrived at Manipal Hospitals,
Mukundapur, I felt I was in the right hands. The doctors did not just treat me,
they reassured me, explained everything, and acted immediately. The entire
procedure was almost painless, and I started feeling better the very next day.
I am amazed at how quickly they saved my life. I had heard about advanced heart
care, but to experience it firsthand, and that too so close to home, is
something I will never forget. I will always be grateful to the doctors and
staff for giving me a new lease of life.”
According
to recent research by the Cardiological Society of India, over 40% of cardiac
patients in tier-2 and rural areas are referred for complex care only after
their condition worsens severely. What makes Manipal
different is not just scale, but the ability to respond in real time. Whether
it’s a collapse during a stenting procedure or a post-surgical complication,
the hospital is equipped with 500+ critical care beds, 75 expert cardiologists, 15 highly skilled
cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons (CTVS), and seven advanced Cath Labs
placed strategically to serve patients from Howrah and neighbouring areas.24x7 emergency teams, and in-house specialists for nephrology,
endocrinology, neurology, and more, ensuring no delay in life-saving decisions.
Every year it carries out more
than 30,000 cardiac procedures and over 3,000 cardiac surgeries.
