Paayal Wordsmith, Kolkata : In a grand celebration of art and culture, Dev Entertainment Ventures unveiled the first song from Ram Kamal Mukherjee's much-anticipated film Binodiini - Ekti Natir Upakhyan, titled “Kanha Tose Hryday Na Jorungi,” at Ahindra Mancha. The event was graced by actress Rukmini Maitra, who mesmerized the audience with a live Kathak performance, vividly portraying the song’s emotional essence.

The song, set at a significant juncture in the film, reflects the pivotal moment when Binodini Dasi chooses to accept the support of Gurumukh Rai, a key figure in her dream of establishing a theatre. Director Ram Kamal Mukherjee’s vision shines through as the film celebrates Binodini Dasi not as a victim, but as a resilient artist who navigated emotional and societal challenges with unyielding strength and determination.

A Symphony of Tradition and Emotion
Penned by Ram Kamal Mukherjee, composed by Sourendro-Soumyojit, and sung by the celebrated Shreya Ghoshal, “Kanha Tose Hryday Na Jorungi” is steeped in Hindustani classical music, drawing from the evocative Raag Manjh Khamaj. The composition, enriched with Kathak influences, captures the grandeur of India’s cultural heritage. The choreography, meticulously crafted by Manisha Basu, Souvik Chakraborty, and Avyaan Roy, complements the song’s period aesthetics.

“We wanted to create a musical piece that seamlessly integrates the elegance of traditional Indian music with contemporary rhythms. The song’s essence lies in its emotions of abhimaan (pride) and viraha (separation), embodied through the metaphor of Radha and Krishna,” said composers Sourendro-Soumyojit.

In the film, the song unfolds as a mujra sequence, intricately designed to reflect the artistic and emotional turmoil of Binodini Dasi while paying homage to the cultural richness of the era. The Hindustani lyrics transport audiences to a bygone time, resonating with the spirit of Binodini’s struggles and aspirations.

A Tribute to Bengal’s Iconic Artist
“This song is a heartfelt homage to Bengal’s most revered stage artist, Binodini Dasi. It encapsulates her resilience, spirit, and artistic legacy that continues to inspire generations. Rukmini’s portrayal of a courtesan in this sequence is both ethereal and graceful, and I am certain that audiences will deeply connect with her performance,” said Director Ram Kamal Mukherjee.

The launch concluded to resounding applause, leaving attendees in awe of the song’s intricate craftsmanship and emotional depth. “Kanha Tose Hryday Na Jorungi” is now available on major streaming platforms, offering audiences a glimpse into the opulent world of Indian art and culture.

Presented by Dev Entertainment Ventures and produced by Pramod Films and Assorted Motion Pictures, Binodiini – Ekti Natir Upakhyan is set to release on 23rd January 2025, across multiplexes and single screens in West Bengal.
