Merlin I am Kolkata extends support to Jatragachi School

Kolkata : Merlin I am Kolkata , the corporate social responsibility arm of Merlin Group has extended its humble support to the Primary school in Jatragachi Nandannagar in Rajarhat. At a formal function at the school, Shri Saket Mohta , Managing Director presented some sports kits and educational stationary to Shri Debashis Sen, Managing director, WBHIDCO , chairman, New Town Kolkata Development Authority in presence of Dr. Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, MP, Barasat,and Shri Tapas Chatterjee, MLA, Rajarhat New town constituency. Merlin I Am Kolkata also presented ten celling fans, two water purifiers for the students of the school to enable them to have access to purified drinking water and pursue classes in a comfortable way. Merlin I am Kolkata also donated two computers to help them pursue computer education.

“I am very happy that one coporate house and an NGO have come forward to support this primary school. This will motivate little kids to pursue their studies. This land belonged to Hidco and we have transferred it to the school authority. I have discussed with education department to get an affiliation from the school education department.I thank Merlin Group for providing computers to the children as computer education is an integral part of education today. They have also provided electric fans and water purifiers for the children. I thank them wholeheartedly, We will jointly try to make this school a successful educational institution”, said Debashis Sen, MD, WBHIDCO and Chairman, NKDA.

  Jatragachi High school is a school waiting to be affiliated under the Secondary board of education , govt of West Bengal. Over 100 Children study in this make shift primary school with no clean source of drinking water and other basic requirements to enable them to attend their classes. The school is in dire need of Water purifiers, electric fans and educational stationary. The school caters to the children of around 600 poor families of construction workers and daily wage earners living in shanties. The area in Jatragachi Nandannagar is known as the labour colony that comes under Resettlement and Rehabilitation site of WBHIDCO. People staying here, work in construction sites and barely earn their two square meals.They work as part time labour or rickshaw puller when they don’t have work at the construction sites. The average family income is within a range between Rs 8000 and Rs 12000. Over 100 children study in the school ranging from 3.6 years of age to 10 years. “We at Merlin I Am Kolkata are committed to the wellbeing of our city . The school in Jatragachi is in a deplorable condition. If our humble help can bring cheer to the little angels studying here, we would feel happy. We can extend more support to the school where construction workers children can pursue quality education”, said Saket Mohta, MD, Merlin Group and founder, Merlin I am Kolkata.


“Kolkata Society for Cultural Heritage is thankful to Debashis Sen , Chairman , NKDA to provide us an opportunity to work for the less privileged children. We are happy to have facilitated a little support to Jatragachi Nandanagar Primary School this time. We did field survey and found that the children did not have basic amenities like access to safe drinking water and computers. It was really extremely difficult for them to attend classes without any electric fan during this scorching summer. Merlin always patronizes to less privileged people and we are thankful to them”, said Sourav Mukherji, Founder President, Kolkata Society for Cultural Heritage.
